Amish Furniture Care

Furniture care is easy as it can get with Amish Furniture.  All wood finishes used by Amish Furniture are classified as post-catalyst conversion varnishes. Amish Furniture uses this kind of finish simply because it is the most durable finish available for use on fine hardwoods. It will resist moisture and damage from almost all household fluids, foods and chemicals. Even nail polish remover will not damage the product. Unlike a less costly lacquer-based product, which is softer and more susceptible to moisture damage, a catalyzed conversion varnish will provide durable protection for years.

It is important to note that ultra-durable catalyzed conversion varnishes require a 30-day period after home installation, at a temperature of at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit, to cure completely. Much as a new car should not be waxed or polished for 30 days after painting, a catalyzed conversion varnish finish needs to be protected for its first 30 days. Hot or wet objects should not be placed directly upon the unprotected finish. Even after the post-installation 30-day curing period, a protective pad should be placed beneath any object too hot to hold.

Care Guide

  • Limit direct sunlight exposure as much as possible. Over-exposure to direct sunlight will cause any finish to fade over time.
  • Excessive waxing can cause moisture from a beverage can or glass to leave a white milky ring on the surface of the wood.
  • Do NOT use cleaners containing bleach.
  • Do NOT use any cleaner containing abrasive as this will scratch the finish.
  • Do NOT allow cleaners containing ammonia to come in contact with the furniture’s finish. Ammonia will discolor certain species, and cause a painted finish to yellow.
  • Excessive exposure to smoke will cause the finish to yellow.
  • Dyes and inks may discolor the finish.
  • Conversion varnish provides a very hard, mar-resistant finish. However, abrasion from rough objects moving around on the surface will create scratches.

Cleaning Guidelines

  • Furniture care for your heirloom Amish Furniture is quite simple.  Generally a soft damp cloth followed by a dry cloth will be sufficient to clean the finish. If a cleaner is required use only a very mild soap and wipe dry. A high quality furniture polish may be used occasionally; apply with a soft cloth following manufacturer instructions.
